Breadbox Farm Rabbit Rescue

We believe that as breeders, it is our responsibility to use our vast rabbit knowledge to also help the rabbits in need in our community. We know that every living creature deserves compassion and gentle care. It is our mission to find these rabbits their place in the world, spread awareness about proper rabbit care, and to help others make good decisions for the rabbits in their lives.

The following rabbits are looking for a loving family. They have either been dropped off directly to us, rescued by one of our local shelters, or have been raised at a rabbitry but have special needs. They will need attentive care and patience as they grow to trust you and learn to love again.

Each rabbit is carefully monitored for health concerns and aggressive behaviors before being offered for adoption, but we cannot guarantee the temperaments of these rabbits like we can our own. We believe that there is a family out there for every rabbit, regardless of their hard past, different ability levels, or trust issues.

When you are ready to adopt a pet, please fill out an Adoption Application Form and Robin or Lisa will contact you if approved to set up an appointment time. To reserve a rabbit you will be required to pay in full through an electronic form of payment.

PICK UP and TRANSPORT OPTIONS

LOCAL PICK UP is available once you are approved for adoption. We have many clients who drive in from the surrounding states. In many instances you may take home your bunny the day you meet them (check for a “ready to go home” date on bunnies under 8 weeks old.)

PRIVATE TRANSPORT and DELIVERY is available through third party transporters. A quick google search will bring up many options. You will be responsible for choosing a transporter you trust and securing your own transportation. We are happy to arrange pick up times with them. We trust Mabel with LC Animal Transport, her number is 347-819-4372. You can reach out to her for timing and transport rates.

DOMESTIC AIRLINE TRANSPORT is also possible through American PetEmbark. You can expect to pay approximately $550-750 total depending on how far the pet is going and miscellaneous fees associated with your pet flying, such as a proper crate for the flight ($60-80) and a required health certificate ($70-90) within 10 days of departure. We have sent many rabbits as far as California and Washington and feel strongly that American Airlines is a safe and trustworthy option for receiving your new pet.

Butterscotch | Domesticated Short Hair Tri Colored Female | Spayed | $400

  • Sex: Female

    Born: 7 years old

    Breed: Domesticated Short Hair

    Variety: Tri Colored

    Weight: 5 lbs 5 oz

  • Butterscotch’s middle name is Julie. I just decided when she arrived that she looked like a Julie too. She is extremely sweet and loves pets. She came to us in April and is already easy to handle and friendly with us, showing she has had great socialization with humans.

She was free range inside in her previous home so she is healthy and has good muscle mass for her age, 7 years. She is already spayed and did live with another female rabbit previously, but their personalities didn’t mesh.

She has a favorite purple puzzle ball toy that can be filled with treats. She is inquisitive and intelligent and would love to be spoiled with lots to do in her new home. Puzzles, a big area, and social time with humans or another rabbit would all work well for her.

  • Butterscotch is already fixed so you do not have to consider the cost of a spay if you are hoping to bring her home with other rabbits.

Aria | Mixed Female | $250

  • Sex: Female

    Born: 9 months old

    Breed: Mixed

    Variety: Chestnut

    Weight: 5 lbs 9 oz

  • Aria is Queen Annie’s princess daughter. She is lovely and gentle but definitely takes time to warm up to humans, although she loves most other rabbits. Her chestnut fur is super silky and shiny and her favorite treats are strawberries.

You can absolutely win her over with fresh greens and veggies as this lady can eat. She has a high activity level and a high metabolism. She would LOVE some space to play and is currently a garden bunny at Breadbox and lives outside full time.

  • Aria is not fixed so consider the cost of a spay if you are hoping to bring her home with other rabbits.

Lilac | Self Black Mixed Female | $250

  • Sex: Female

    Born: 2-4 yrs old

    Breed: Mixed

    Variety: Self Black

    Weight: 7lbs 9 oz

  • Lilac has really grown on us in her time here. She is the best cuddler and will sit with Lexie, laying on her chest, for an hour. She has an awesome purr and has even been known to groom her favorite humans.

She can be a little intimidating to feed, as she gets very excited and lunges towards your hand. And she isn’t a tiny bunny, she is a big confident lady! We’ve discovered an easy fix. if you hand her a fresh leaf or treat, she will happily munch away while you fill her bowl and care for her area.

Lilac is currently living outdoors full time and would do well as a garden bunny with some area to run around, or as an indoor queen. She is a medium activity level.

She needs a family that wants to spend some time holding her, (she is the weight of a human baby!) and where she has a bit of space.

  • Lilac is not fixed so consider the cost of a spay if you are hoping to bring her home with other rabbits.

Chelsea | Chestnut Netherland Dwarf Female | $250

  • Sex: Female

    Born: 4/29/23

    Breed: Netherland Dwarf

    Variety: Chestnut

    Weight: 2.5 lbs

  • Chelsea is a super diva. Instead of sugar and spice, she is mostly just sassy and spice with some serious cage aggression. She has been known to lunge at our hands when entering her cage. While she does not often bite, it can be quite scary if you aren’t expecting this.

For this reason Chelsea needs an experienced animal person who can deal with some sass. We think she is absolutely perfect just the way she is! But we do want to prepare whoever takes her home with some lessons about how to improve aggressive tendencies.

Cage aggression is when a rabbit (often female) becomes protective of their “burrow” and lunges and sometimes even nips anyone who tries to enter the space. This can make feeding time complicated if you are placing the bowl inside a cage. They can still be very friendly and social outside of their defined burrow space. Chelsea’s attitude is much improved when she is outside of her cage and when she has the space to exercise freely. Doing zoomies and binkies helps rabbits deal with pent up energy and resets their nervous system. For these reasons, we would like to find Chelsea a home where she has access to some exercise space at least once a day. We would also suggest feeding her outside of her “burrow” space.

She is one of the most beautiful chestnut ladies that has ever grown up here, but due to her slight aggressive tendencies we decided not to move forward with her in our breeding program. Besides that, she is in perfect health, loves to eat, and will be easy to win over if you are patient with her. She is used to being held and carried around the house and is a good lap bunny. She deserves the world, and we know there is someone out there who will admire her more spicy tendencies.

  • Chelsea is not fixed so consider the cost of a spay if you are hoping to bring her home with other rabbits.

Fable | White Holland Lop female | $250

  • Breed: 100% Holland Lop

    Age: Approximately 9 months

    Size: 2.5 -3 lbs

    Color: White

Special Notes: Perfect examples of holland lop type. Pure bred for sure.

  • Fable was raised by children in their previous home and was in excellent condition when dropped off to us. Their family was simply going through big life changes and needed to re home her. She is stunning, young, and healthy. Really, she is the ideal rescue situation which is rare!

Overall, Fable is very easy to handle and sit with once you have her out of her cage. She is used to being picked up and will relax completely in your hands if held properly. We have been nibbled a bit here and there by her. She has some cage aggression right now when you try and take her out of her cage. It is a big change to come to our program with so many people around all the time and we think it is simply her adjusting to our situation.

  • Fable is not fixed, so plan to get her spayed at 6 months if you choose to home her with other rabbits.

*Reserved for Margaret

Winter | Himalayan Male | $200

  • Breed: Himalayan

    Sex: male (not neutered)

    Age: Under 3 years

Full Grown Size:Smaller than a house cat

  • Winter came to us emaciated and dirty coming from an unsafe situation. He was so dirty we couldn’t even tell he was white. Surprisingly, he was still friendly and will come right up to you for food and pets once you have won his trust.

After a couple months at Breadbox, he has transformed! He is now a healthy weight with a white coat and shading on his ears and feet. Winter has ruby colored eyes and is a little smaller than a house cat.

We have learned that he is confident and determined, and quite the escape artist. But he is loyal to a fault! He won’t ever leave you. Once he escapes his pen, he happily hops through our gardens munching away the lambs ear plants.

Winter would do really well as a garden pet as he is most comfortable outside and would love to have space to run around.

  • Winter is not fixed so consider the cost of a neuter if you choose to home him with other rabbits.

Ways to Help our Breadbox Rescue Program

  1. Share. Spread the word about our available rabbits on social media. Find us @breadboxfarm. This helps more than you think!

  2. Donate your time. We are always happy to include new volunteers in cleaning cages, socializing shy rabbits, and feeding and watering the herd. Email us if you’d like to donate your time.

  3. Build. More cages and rabbit runs mean we can save more rabbits in a healthy, clean, and enriching environment! We currently need individuals willing to donate their time and carpentry skills building hutches and runs.

  4. Donate. The Breadbox Rescue Program is sustained on donations, community support, and A LOT of hard work and emotional moments behind the scenes. We try to keep a reserve of $400-600 at all times in our rescue fund for possible emergency health care costs. And we are currently saving to build 6 more hutches with a large attached play yard. 100% of your financial donation goes directly to providing for rescue rabbits. Our breeding program and all business related to it is a separate entity.
